I love a great passion project! They fuel creativity and learning that you can apply to all kinds of situations.
I really love talking, I want to make an impact and I try to do one creative thing a day because it lights me up.
In my free time I am learning how to watercolor. I’d like to be better at it than I am. Sometimes I go through painting droughts where I don’t pick up a brush because my skills don’t match ambition. But, painting is a humbling act and when I get over myself, I find I always learn something new to apply to my next piece of artwork.
I find that having creative passion projects outside of the work I’m doing makes me a better person. Not just a marketer. A better person all around because I feel fulfilled. There’s beauty in creating new projects that teach you something new and there’s hard lessons learned in knowing when to let them go and when to step on the gas.
Two millennial moms who explore why the mental load exists and how we can lighten it in order to break a generational cycle and raise children in more equal households.
Together, my co-host and I explore societal issues that influence and create the mental load for women as well as practical solutions to help change the balance of invisible labor in households.
In our first year, with two seasons, we have:
4,500 unique downloads
Average 500 unique listeners/month
Average 100 unique downloads/episode
We’ve booked guests from global companies such as Yahoo and Motherly to speak to issues that impact women, families and children as it relates to the mental load.
For two years I hosted a podcast called “Start Marketing”. My goal was to provide actionable and accessible marketing tips for small business owners. They really get the raw end of the deal. Marketing is expensive and, call me snobby, but it’s not something just anyone can do (even if they think they can). Marketing for growth is a full time job and for small business owners, they’re often boxed out of great marketing opportunities because they can’t afford to hire someone to do it for them, but they don’t have the capacity or capability to do it themselves.
Start Marketing exists to lift the veil and give real insights behind marketing strategies and provide easy, attainable steps someone can take to implement themselves. Not every strategy works for every business. And sometimes what works for someone else, doesn’t work for you.
I’ve taken a hiatus from Start Marketing. I burned out; I wasn’t happy doing it as a hobby but I also didn’t want to take the time and energy needed to grow the podcast to the next level. It was a humbling experience to let a passion project go, but it led me to my next adventure…
Light + Balance
A Planner for Moms
who want to lighten the mental load and lead more balanced lives.
Have you heard of the mental load?
Definition: mental load is the cognitive effort involved in managing your work, relationships, a family, and a household. Mental load is the whole bundle of details you manage throughout the day. It has to do with your responsibilities, formal or not, as well as the decisions you have to make.
This falls disproportionately to women, who, in the 80’s began working outside the home and doubled their workload. Meanwhile, the burden that men carried related to their households remained the same.
The effects of the mental load are enormous. From stalling economic growth to increased divorces among millennials.
But why do we have it and how can we solve it? That’s my newest passion project. Through my burnout experience, I was inspired to create a planner to help moms lighten the mental load and lead more balanced lives so we can actually live our lives instead of going through the motions. I designed it and learned how to self-publish through print on demand services.
I’m in the process of convincing my very witty mom friend to start a podcast with me.
